Music is integral to worship in Newtownbreda. Each week carefully chosen hymns, songs, anthems and instrumental music enrich the praise. In addition to a formal choir there is an all-age singing and instrumental group called Musica and a small band who accompany more informal praise music.
The main choir is about 30 strong and provides a musical lead each Sunday morning and for an evening service on the first Sunday of the month. Rehearsals take place each Thursday from 8pm until 9.30pm from September to May. The choir sings a broad range of music, from traditional anthems to Afro-American spirituals, world church songs and Taizé chants. As well as contributing to weekly worship, the choir prepares music in celebration of the main church festivals where their presentation is often enhanced by additional singers and instrumentalists.
The choir warmly welcomes new members of all ages. While there is no formal audition, new singers are asked to spend a trial period of 4 weeks before confirming ongoing commitment. The musical Director, Mr David Stewart, is the organist and choirmaster and oversees all music. David can be contacted by email
Musica is a flexible group of singers and instrumentalists that leads music at two evening services a month in the Foyer and contributes from time to time to morning worship. Repertoire is drawn from Iona, Taizé, Keith Getty and the world church amongst others. Members of Musica come when they can: it’s the ideal group for people of any age who want to be involved with music but who aren’t able to make a regular commitment. Singers form a core and there are currently instrumentalists playing violin, clarinet, guitar, keyboard and percussion. The line-up varies from week to week, based on who’s available. Rehearsals take place before the evening service and occasionally on a weekday evening or after morning worship.
Musica is always delighted to welcome new members be they instrumentalists of grade 4 standard upwards or singers. Musica is co-ordinated by Jacynth Hamill who can be contacted by email
Our Praise Band leads worship at the third way service in the foyer on the third Sunday each month. The band are a flexible group of musicians interested in promoting and providing a modern approach to worship within the congregation. Consisting of guitars, keyboards and drums they aspire to produce an eclectic but contemporary celebration that embraces the future of worship music whilst still acknowledging traditional intentions.
By introducing new songs to the congregation and demonstrating that modern praise can be both uplifting and inspiring the band lead worship every third Sunday evening of the month and whenever required otherwise. They will embrace any like minded individuals who are keen to join and would like to encourage everyone of all ages to come along to the youth services in the church foyer to experience an evolving and hopefully refreshing take on worship.
